“David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.” 1 Samuel 17:45-48 NIV
Have you ever noticed the amazing confidence that David had when he faced Goliath? He RAN to the battle line to meet Goliath head on. He had no doubt whatsoever that God would give him victory over his giant enemy, and deliver the nation of Israel from their existential threat.
Notice that his confidence was NOT in himself or his own abilities. His assurance rested solely in God and His awesome power. David knew that this was God’s battle, not his own. The battle wasn’t against the Israelites; it was God they hated.
So often, when we face hostility, God is the one under attack, not us.
David saw his enemy through the eyes of his almighty God, and through that lens, Goliath shrunk right down to size.
What giants are you facing today? I want to challenge you to see your challenges through the eyes of our all-powerful, almighty, sovereign God who loves you more than you could ever imagine. When you do, they’ll shrink right down to size, just small enough to fit under your feet.
